Back to school

The end of 2015 was for Youth4Media the time to come back to school. Managing director Daria Jaranowska was invited by the Primary School and Junior High School in Rychliki – a small village in Poland. The purpose of this invitation was to give young and unprivileged pupils a chance to attend basic workshops about media – especially how to use their smartphones to take professional photos.

In the end of December 2015 the managing director of European Youth4Media Network visited a little school in Rychliki, Poland in which she lead workshops about basics of media. The idea and invitation came from one of the local English teachers: ‘I took part in one of the media camps organised by Youth4Media and I started to think how can I give the possibility to my students to gain the same skills. I ask Miss Daria to help us and she agreed to present some basics of media to my students’ – says Beata Jaranowska.

The workshops took place during one day. Daria Jaranowska had classes in 6 different groups – starting from 10 years old children and finishing with 15 years old youth. As Natalia from the 6th grade says - ‘I really liked the workshops. They were interesting and I learnt how to take photos. The games were amazing. I enjoyed them very much’. The idea of the visit was to show how to use smartphones in order to take good pictures. Through games, videos and practical exercises pupils had the chance to understand the basic rules of picture composition. ‘I really enjoyed the workshops. I learnt how to use my smartphone to make better photos. Especially I liked the game about recognising the objects from the close ups of the photos’ – admits Katarzyna from the 6th grade. Michal from the same group would even like to repeat this experience: ‘The workshops organised by Miss Jaranowska were really interesting. We learnt about picture composition. I really would like to have them more often, I think I will ask for organising it one more time’.

All the workshops were conducted in Polish and English. The students had the possibility also to have some lessons from radio and audio. In groups of older children Daria Jaranowska explained the possibilities of voluntary services on the local and European level.

The small village of Rychliki is located in Poland. Unfortunatelly, this countryside is one of the poorest points in the region of Warmia and Mazury. The source of living for many families in Rychliki are farms. The bigger city where children could have more possibilities is located nearly 35 kilometres away from Rychliki. ‘My goal was to help those children realize that they don’t need expensive cameras to take good photos. Most of those children live in the countryside and their parents are not wealthy. I hope that thanks to my lessons they understand that there is always a way to do big stuff even with less possibilities’ – admits Daria Jaranowska – an international media trainer.
