Movies for dreamers

Did you know that getting a Golden Globe award means winning US$14,2 millions extra at the ticket window? But winning an Oscar is nothing comparable with a Golden Ball Award. And have you ever heard that the International Press is choosing the winners of the Globes?

We all know the Oscar and Golden Globe´s nights but it is not so clear what is what or how both are working.

For example, these two glamorous and Hollywood shows are in the top 3 most-watched programs: Grammy, Oscars and Globes.

Which one was first?

16th May, 1929, Oscar Night was born. And 15 years later, in 20th Century Fox studios (Los Angeles), Golden Globe Awards started.

26th February Oscars will take place, 37 days after the Globes (last Sunday, 8th January).

Relevance?

At the Oscars, the excellence in cinematic achievements in the United States film industry is recognized

With the Globes, cinema and television professionals also are taken into consideration and prized.

How much do they cost?

This is the real question people involved in these shows do not want to explain.

Depending on cost calculations, Hollywood spent around US$100 and US$500 millions with ad campaign. Also, best movie award could mean US$3 millions extra at the ticket window. A really small amount if we compare with US$14,2 millions that winning a Globe means.

Actually, getting a Golden Ball award represents till US$50 millions in contracts per year.

But the huge difference between getting an Oscar and a Globe is the prestige an Oscar gives. This award can mean an increase of US$10 millions in contracts.

This year, Meryl Streep used allusion to Donald Trupm, President-elect of the United States, in her speech, saying that “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick 'em all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts. They gave me three seconds to say this. An actor's only job is to enter the lives of people who are different from us and let you feel what that feels like. And there were many, many, many powerful performances this year that did exactly that, breathtaking, passionate work ”.

Even so, the Golden Globes were criticized as boring and lukewarm.

And even if every year there are comments that Globes are the introduction for Oscars and that Globes winners´ will be the same as in Oscars - it was like this during 10 consecutives years, but it stopped with Argo and 12 Years a Slave and only with 4 movies in last 10 years got a Globe and an Oscar - still we care about winners.
