Freak Power

Big Bang Theory is and was a boom. Four freaks talking about physics for 20 minutes each episode. Actually, it is a TV series where four real nerds are making fun of the “cool ones”. And you know what, it works. That much that companies are paying around US$ 360.260,00 just for 30 seconds of ad in Big Bang Theory break. That means more than 10 thousand dollars per second.

And the reason is not just normal nerd clothes with Batman or Green Lanter or always the same three rooms where the episodes are (mostly Penny's or Sheldon´s flats and the comic store). This huge success is about how to mix intellectual jokes about physics and scientific topics with daily life. In fact, 5,80 jokes per minute.

How? Using the same structure as in the mythical Friends - TV series which was the highest-rated show on TV for the 2001 and 2002 seasons - but with a completely different point of view: freak´s life, because they are not any more the ones being laughted at, or the ones who have nothing to say.

And since then, since Big Bang Theory boom in 2007, the world became in a way more open and, why not, nerd place. Crazy people loving cats or unicorns, scientific and cultural quizes and T-shirts with heroes from comics are everywhere.

Most of the stereotypes we had are gone. And now are a fashion. With Big Bang Theory we just realize that it is not important how we fit or how many friends we had in high school. Life is about who we are, about people with feelings and thoughts. Sheldon or Howard do not care about what others think about them, so they will wear turtleneck sweaters and colourful Vans. So at the end, the spectator realizes she or he is laughing at her or his ignorance, not making fun of others. And this is how Big Bang Theory got so many different targets and has become one of the most relevant and famous TV series in the history.

Penny:

Hey guys, I know it is not my business but I need to ask: What does Sheldon like?

Leonard:

What do you mean?

Penny:

Well, you know, girls? Guys? Puppets?

Leonard:

Actually we believe Sheldon does not like.

Penny:

Oh, come on, everybody likes something.

Howard:

Not Sheldon. During all these years, we developed so many theories about who he could reproduce himself. I support cell division.

Penny:

What?

Howard:

My opinion is one day Sheldon will eat a unusual amount of Thai food and he will divide into two Sheldons.

Leonard:

I believe Sheldon could be the larval shape of his species and some day he will make webs and will born two months later with wings and exoskeleton.

Penny:

Ok, thank you for nightmares.
