Interviews and Cutting: The Video Groups in Action
There are two video groups in the project Changes in Media Education and Political Dialogue Perspectives. Their goal is to present each one video on the project‘s conference on November 12th.
On the first day the two groups started together with a lesson about picture composition and other basics of audiovisual techniques. The two trainers did not just how everything is done theoretically – they showed them examples and draw or discuss some own ideas.
The second day the groups split up to learn to use the professional video cameras. First, the trainers showed the participants how zoom, focus, light etc. work on these cameras and how to use the tripod or how to hold the camera in the hand. They also gave them tips how to deal with different situations in the field. Then the participants went outside to make some shots to learn by doing. The results were discussed with the trainers, so they could also mention some basic mistakes.
In the afternoon the groups discussed what topic they can make a video about and they started working. The group with Daria Jaranowska as responsible trainer chose to interview the photographer Brendan Hoffman. They accompanied him to the America House where he was interviewed about his work in aFacebook live stream. After the interview the group went with Hoffman to his home to interview him about the topics of the project. They had developed the questions for the interview in the morning. The interview took 45 minutes and it digged deep into the experience of Hoffman as a news photographer. He talked about his most special experiences, his ideas about the role of media in society and how he got into being a news reporter during the Maidan Protests and later in the uncontrolled territories in the east of Ukraine. The next day they accompanied him when he was walking through Kyiv to take photosand they took some shots of him.
The group with Carolin Wart as responsible trainer decided to make a street survey about armed conflicts and what impact these conflicts have on their life. They also asked the people what they think how they can cope with it. The group went to Maidan to make this survey. Then they cut the shots and translated the answers to add subtitles to the video. The also made an appointment with a professor of political sciences to interview her about armed conflicts and media. Because the professor had to cancel the appointment, the group decided to go to an exhibition of the foundation Izolyatsia – Platform for Cultural Initiatives to make some more shots and they also spoke to the curator. They also intent to interview Mamuka Andguladze, the representative of the Georgian delegation in the project, The group wants to interview him about the conflicts in Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia, their similarities, their consequences and most common reasons for these conflicts.
